Edward John Chopko Sr. age 90, of Newton Falls passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, June 22, 2013 at the Clare Bridge Assisted Living in Austintown. Ed was born July 7, 1922 in Newton Falls, OH the son of the late Andrew Chopko and Mary Petricko Chopko. Three infant siblings preceded him in death. His beloved wife of 63 years, Ann Dickey Chopko, whom he married August 29, 1942, preceded him to Heaven January 5, 2006. Childhood sweethearts, they both graduated from Newton Falls High School in 1940. Ed was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre. He was honorably discharged on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1946. Ed and Ann owned and operated Eddie's Haven Restaurant in Newton Falls from 1946 to 1962. He then was employed as an electrician at several NE Ohio manufacturing facilities. He retired from S.K. Wellman Co in Bedford, Ohio. He was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Church in Newton Falls. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, VFW, AMVETS, and the Warren Amateur Radio Association. He was an avid golfer and held a private pilot's license. He enjoyed amateur radio (K8KAE) and fishing on Lake Erie. He was very handy and prided himself on repairing machinery and electronics. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his son Edward J. (Diane) Chopko Jr. of Howland; grandchildren Jeff (Lisa) Chopko of Columbus, Greg Chopko of Howland, Brian (Shauna Weyrauch, Ph.D) Chopko, Ph.D of Cuyahoga Falls, and Scott Chopko of Howland; great-grandchildren Anna Chopko of Columbus and Sarah, Kevin, and Kyle Chopko of Howland; and special friend Ruby Bajnok of Newton Falls. The family will receive friends on Tuesday June 25, 2013 with Knights of Columbus service at 5:00 pm followed by calling hours from 5:30 to 8:00pm at the James Funeral Home in Newton Falls. Services will be held at the James Funeral Home on Wednesday June 26, 2013 at 12:30PM followed by a Funeral Mass at 1:00 pm at St. Mary & St. Joseph Church in Newton Falls. Edward will be laid to rest beside his wife Ann at St. Joseph Cemetery with military honors by the Newton Falls Honor Guard. The family requests contributions be made in Ed's memory to St. Joseph's Church General Fund, 131 West Quarry St., Newton Falls, Ohio 44444.
