Emerson Russell (Russ) Walters, age 92 of Newton Falls passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family & friends on Friday June 14, 2013. He was born on Nov. 14, 1920 in New Castle, PA the son of the late Thomas Adam Walters and Vera Heleana (Walker) Walters. Russ married Janet (Winland) Gardner in 2004 and she survives. He has lived in Newton Falls since 2005, formerly of New Castle, PA. He worked as a Prison Guard at HT Penal Institution for the State of Pennsylvania for over 20 years retiring in 1990. He proudly served his country in the US Army serving during WWII where he earned the Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars with Oak Leaf Cluster for Valor, two Purple Hearts for wounds received when captured in France on Aug. 29, 1944, he ended up being a POW in Germany Stalag 7A for almost a year. He also received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, combat infantry badge, WWII Victory Medal, POW Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and a number of medals while serving in the 1ST Infantry Division from 1942 to 1945. He also reenlisted in the US Army from 1947 to 1950. Russell loved hunting, fishing, boating, spending time at his cottage in the mountains of Tionesta, PA, and family time. He was a member of the General Assembly Church of God in Newton Falls for many years. He is preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers Tom, Cecil & Joseph Walters, 1 sister Shirley Walters, and 1 daughter: Tina Gracey. Memories of Russ will be carried on by his family: 2 daughters: Donna & Bill Swope of Newton Falls, Bobbette & Dave Arbogast of Newton Falls, 1 sister, Dorothy Costeal of Phoenix, AZ, 6 grandchildren: Carrie & (Josh) Calladine, MaryBeth & (Jim) Walton, Tamara, Shane Swope, and Shelby & Joey Gossick, 7 great-grandchildren: Emma, Hannah, Abbie, Isaac, & Silas Calladine, and Brooke & Hunter Walton, and a number of nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be at the James Funeral Home in Newton Falls on Monday June 17, 2013 from 6-8 pm. Funeral Services will be at the General Assembly Church of God in Newton Falls on Tuesday June 18, 2013 at 11:00am with Pastor Mitch Meadors officiating the service.
