Obituary

Gene Lawrence Zorn, 89 of Newton Falls entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at his home. Gene was born on April 24, 1927 in Dinsmore Twp., OH the son of the late Lawrence and Clara (Kies) Zorn. Gene was a US Army veteran serving during WWII for 15 months where he participated in football, baseball and basketball. After the war, Gene received his Masters & Bachelors Degree in Education from Ohio State University. He also attended Kansas State University, Holy Cross College and Wells College. He was active in Ohio State University Alumni Association activities, where he was also a member of Athletic Association of Ohio State University, Kappa Phi Kappa fraternity, the Stadium Club, active member of the Buckeye Club all of Ohio State University. He was a mathematics instructor for 34 years with the Newton Falls school district retiring in 1991. While teaching with Newton Falls schools he also coached varsity basketball for 31 years. On January 17, 2014, Newton Falls officially named their gym the Gene Zorn Gymnasium in his honor. During his earlier years, Gene was very athletic, he played on several softball, volleyball, baseball and basketball teams in Shelby, Franklin, and Trumbull counties. He participated in bowling, and horseshoe leagues in Newton Falls. Gene was a member of the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, inducted in 1980. Gene was also inducted into the Trumbull County Sports Hall of Fame.He was a member of Mathematical Association of America and Ohio Mathematical Society. Gene was a member of the American Legion Post #236, VFW in Newton Falls, and 2 investment clubs. He helped support many charities. Gene was a communicator for the Lutheran Brotherhood Insurance Company, a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Botkins, and active in Messiah Lutheran Church of Newton Falls. He worked as an employee at Provico Feed Company, Copeland Refrigeration Company, Copperweld Steel Company, US Post Office, and H & R Block Tax Service. Wonderful memories of Gene will be carried on by his dear friend, Betty Force of Newton Falls. Gene was preceeded in death by his parents, his sister, Wilda "Louise" Vllely, his brother, Roderick Zorn and his best friend, Robert "Bob" Force. Per Gene's wishes, cremation has taken place and no services will be held. Gene will be laid to rest at Loramie Valley Cemetery in Botkins, OH.
