Gerald (Jerry) G. Calland, age 78, of Newton Falls passed away peacefully at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren Tuesday evening after a long battle with cancer. He was born on February 5, 1936 in Newark, OH, the son of the late Allen Britton & Dorothy J. (Crosser) Calland. Jerry has been a life long resident of Newton Falls and graduated high school with the class of 1954. He married Wilma Jean Nichols on January 21, 1957 and they have enjoyed 57 years together. Jerry was a very active member of the Newton Falls United Methodist Church where he has served in many different roles. He was a member of Newton Falls Masonic Lodge #462. He worked at Denman Tire for 41 years in sales and retired in 1997. Jerry had many interests, among them were oil painting, reading and his favorite pastime, golf. He had played in many golf leagues at River View Golf Course where he would also help out as a starter. He will be missed by his wife, Wilma Calland; his daughter, Linda Miller: son and daughter in law Greg and April Calland all of Newton Falls: a sister and brother in law Carol and Tom Doty of Columbia, SC; brother and sister in law Ron and Pat Calland of Lynchburg, VA; six grandchildren Lindsay, Danielle, and Alex Calland, Lee, Jacob and Tyler & (Hailee) Miller; and one great grandchild, Mason. Mr. Calland was preceded in death by his parents and infant son Richard Calland. The family asks that all contributions please be made to the Newton Falls United Methodist Church 336 Ridge Rd. Newton Falls, Ohio 44444 in memory of Gerald G. Calland.
The family will receive friends at the Newton Falls United Methodist Church in Newton Falls on Saturday March 29, 2014 from 12:00pm to 3:00pm followed by Masonic services at 3:00pm. Then immediately following the Masonic service Rev. Gordon Ferguson will officiate the Memorial service.
