Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that family members announce the passing of Gordon McCracken, a loving father, devoted husband, cherished neighbor, and friend, who left us on August 25, 2024. Born on September 21,1949, in Wheeling, West Virginia, Gordon earned a Bronze Star as an Army Sergeant in the 1st Calvary Division Airmobile during the Vietnam War.

Gordon spent much of his formative years helping his father, Joseph, run McCracken's Garage in Pennsylvania, where he developed a lifelong passion for mechanics. He had a special talent for bringing worn-out engines back to life, finding deep satisfaction in taking things apart and making them run again. Whether it was cars, tractors, or anything with a motor, Gordon loved the challenge and reward of making machines work. He was particularly fond of Chevy V8 big-block muscle cars, and his face would light up at the sound of an engine revving. Although he no longer owned his beloved 1967 Chevelle SS, that car always held a special place in his heart.

Gordon's love for motors extended beyond the garage. He found joy in dirt bike riding, attending tractor pulls, and the thrill of drag racing. His enthusiasm for these activities was contagious, and he loved sharing these experiences with family and friends.

By trade, Gordon was an autoworker at General Motors, where he dedicated 38 years of his life with pride. Throughout his career, he made many lifelong friends whom he cherished even after his retirement in 2007.

Above all, Gordon's greatest pride and joy came from his family. As a father and grandfather, he was endlessly proud of his children and grandchildren. He loved them with all his heart, and nothing made him happier than watching them grow and succeed. His love of family included a sense of exploration, leading to many small road trips that discovered new places and created lasting memories his family will cherish forever.

Gordon had a warm spot for all animals throughout his life and a compassionate nature that touched everyone who knew him. His love for music and stereo systems created lasting memories, especially for his children, who will always feel a special connection to him through songs and the lessons and conversations shared in the garage. Gordon's artistic side also flourished through his beautiful stained-glass projects.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Joseph and Thelma McCracken, and daughter-in-law Jody McCracken. Surviving is his wife of 40 years, Barbara McCracken; his children, Amy (Kevin) Middleton, Dennis McCracken, and Andrea (Vince) Taddei; and his beloved grandchildren, Savannah and Allison Middleton, Angela McCracken, Jackson Neuman, and Jana Taddei.

In accordance with his wishes, Gordon has been cremated.  A Memorial Service to honor his life will be held at the James Funeral Home in Newton Falls on Saturday Sept 14, 2024 at 11:00am with Pastor Bill Carter officiating. Following the service, he will be interred at Lordstown Cemetery with full military services by the Newton Falls Veterans Honor Guard.
