Obituary

Retired Gunnery Sgt. Carl B. Clifford, age 86, with 20 years of service in the United States Marine Corps, passed away peacefully on Wednesday August 31, 2011 at this home in Berlin, Maryland. Carl was born on August 25, 1925 in Willard, OH the son of the late William and Julia (Brown) Clifford. He graduated from Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, OH in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology. He was also a boy scout from the age of 12, and following graduation from college he joined the Boy Scouts of America in Warren, OH. While with the Boy Scouts of America he earned the Silver Beaver Award, a council- level distinguished service award for a registered adult leader. Carl worked 31 years as a teacher with the Newton Falls School Board of Education. In addition to teaching, he was passionate as a track and field coach, girl's basketball coach, 7th grade football coach, and a assistant coach for varsity football. Carl is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Sylvia S. Clifford of Berlin, MD, four siblings: Raymond Clifford and his wife Betty of Fayetteville, NC, Shirley McCartney of Parker, CO, Kathleen Barron of Pleasant City, OH, Marge Long and life partner Don Hayes of Pleasant City, OH, a son Kevin Clifford and his wife Laurie of Columbiana, OH, a daughter, Janet Clifford Quick and her husband James of Berlin, MD, seven grandchildren, Ken Krisher of Hailey, ID, Rich Krisher and his wife Jennifer of Lewiston, ID, Rob Krisher of Vancouver, WA, Hattie Quick and her husband Peter Shipley of Baltimore, MD, Samantha Mayhew of Columbiana, OH, and Mitchell and Gabriel Clifford of Columbiana, OH. He is also survived by two great grandchildren Logan and Kendall Krisher of Lewiston, ID. In addition to his parents, two brothers Robert and Harold Clifford, and his daughter Patricia Clifford Krisher preceded him in death. Funeral services for Carl will be at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery 10175 Rawiga Rd. Rittman, OH 44270 on Thursday Sept. 8, 2011 at 2:00 pm, and will be buried with full military honors by the United States Marine Corps. In lieu of flowers , the family requests that memorial donations be made to either the Newton Falls United Methodist Church (336 Ridge Rd. Newton Falls, OH 444444), Newton Falls VFW Post #3332 (433 Arlington Blvd. Newton Falls, OH 44444), or the Newton Falls American Legion Post # 236 ( PO Box 297 Newton Falls, OH 44444).
