IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Hazel
Stanley
January 22, 2015
Hazel Stanley, age 90, of Newton Falls, passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital of Youngstown from complications of a stroke. Loving wife of 67 years to Fred Stanley, beloved mother of Dale (James Brewer Sr.), Diane (Dan) Clements, adored Mom-mom of Grace and Matt Clements, and favorite aunt of many. She is preceded in death by her parents, Earle A. and Florence Fenstermaker, sister, Sissy Mower, and brother, Richard Fenstermaker. Born Hazel Laverne Fenstermaker on February 25, 1924 in Braceville Township, Ohio, she grew up the youngest of three. She played basketball and ran track (high jump) until Braceville stopped offering girls' sports, graduating from Braceville High School in 1942. Hazel married Fred Stanley, of Windham, Ohio, on June 6, 1947. They began a life together, settling in Newton Falls after living for a short while in Windham. Hazel worked at the Union Savings and Trust/Bank One in Newton Falls for 36 years, until retiring in 1986. A dear member of First Christian Church of Newton Falls for many, many years, Hazel could be found in the choir loft on Sunday mornings, a strong alto, until her vision weakened in the last couple years. A lifelong athlete, Hazel enjoyed bowling and spending time on the golf course, in both women's and pairs leagues. In the summer, if she wasn't on the greens, she was working in the garden with Fred, growing vegetables and flowers, or picking apples and all sorts of berries. She loved vacations by the water, in Canada, Michigan and Wisconsin and at the Ocean with her family. She enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, playing cards and reading. Hazel was known for delicious pies of any type, her famed apple dumplings, and tasty cookies. Equally as sweet as her confectionaries was her disposition - always thoughtful and generous, she could comfort others with her heartfelt words and earnest hugs. Hazel had a wonderful sense of humor, easily filling a room with her joyful laugh. A genuinely cherished woman, Hazel will be sorely missed, but her joyful spirit will live in the hearts of all she touched. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2015 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at James Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Sunday at 2:00 pm at the Newton Falls First Christian Church. Rev. Calvin Mason will officiate. Hazel will be laid to rest at Newton Falls Cemetery. Arrangments have been entrusted to James Funeral Home, 8 East Broad Street, Newton Falls, OH 44444 (330) 872-5440.
