Melvin Powell, age 88 of Newton Falls entered into eternal rest on Sunday, November 20, 2016. Melvin was born on March 21, 1928 in Calhoun, GA the son of the late Myrlin & Jeffie (Gravitt) Powell. Melvin graduated from Red Bud High School in Calhoun, GA. He then went on to graduate from West Georgia Junior College. He moved to Newton Falls in 1948. Melvin married the former Betty Lou Prosser on October 15, 1960. Melvin and Betty were blessed with 43 wonderful years of marriage before her passing on August 31, 2004. Melvin was a veteran of the US Army serving during the Korean War. He served 17 months in Korea. He was employed at Rockwell International in the bumper plant until its closing. He then went to work at Thomas Steel as a steelworker until his retirement in 1993. Melvin was a member of the First Christian Church in Newton Falls, Newton Falls Masonic Lodge and Newton Falls American Legion Post 236. He enjoyed going to the Newton Falls Community Center for lunch, working on crossword puzzles, the Cleveland Indians, Nascar and Indy Car Racing, and his grandchildren. Loving memories of Melvin will be carried on by his daughters; Brenna (Scott) Gardner of Pickerington, Ruthanne (David) Brown of Cortland, granddaughter, Leanne Brown, grandsons, Steven Gardner, David Brown, sister-in-law, Ruth (Ralph) Fellows of New Middletown and sister-in-law, Mary Helen Powell of Canton. Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, an infant brother, and brother, Roy Powell. The Family will receive friends at James Funeral Home on Sunday, November 27, 2016 from 2-3 pm. Funeral services will follow at 3 pm. Mr. Powell will be laid to rest next to his wife Betty at Newton Falls Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions take the form of donation to Epithany Lutheran Church, 268 Hill Rd. North, Pickerington, OH 43147 for the Youth Gathering Fund or First Christian Church, 17 North Center Street, Newton Falls, OH 44444 for the Camp Christian Fund. The family would like to thank Bella Care Hospice and Washington Square Nursing Center for the wonderful care given to Melvin this past week.
