Obituary

Janet Louise (Morris) Gordon December 16, 1952 – July 6, 2026 After seven years of battling Ulcerative Colitis complications, Janet Gordon passed away the evening of Monday July 6, 2026. Janet was also known as Jan, Weezie, mom, Aunt Jan, and Nana. Janet was born December 16, 1952, in Warren, Ohio to the late Kermit and Jean (Scott) Morris. She was happily married to her Jackson-Milton High School sweetheart, David Gordon, until his passing in 2012.

Janet started her career at Austintown Walmart as an associate, then a department manager, then a photo lab manager, and finished as a claims clerk and trainer for her market district until her retirement. She was very involved in helping to organize fundraisers for coworkers with severe illnesses and with the Down Syndrome Association of the Valley (DSAV). As an active advocate for the DSAV Buddy Walks, she recruited volunteers from Walmart, organized donations from the district, and worked the annual event for many years. In addition, she helped with the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals of Akron telethons and regularly donated blood to the American Red Cross.

Always drawn to the water, she moved back to her hometown of Lake Milton to enjoy Lake Life. She loved boating with her family, watching her grandchildren swim in the bay, prepping delicious summer dishes, and spending the evening around a firepit roasting hotdogs and the “just right” marshmallow for smores while talking about life’s recent events and telling ghost stories. A porch was always important to her too, as she valued chilling on her swing or in her rocker – breathing in the scent of her honeysuckle and watching her hummingbirds.

Janet also cherished cooking and baking, especially for family at every holiday. Some sweets she was known for are snickerdoodles, butterscotch and lemon pies, and her German chocolate cake - to name just a very few. In addition, she valued her card time with “The Girls”, including her mother, sisters, sisters-in-law, daughters, and nieces. Plus, her three, beloved grandchildren, Curtis, Lila, and Hanna were the light that lit her path no matter what life threw at her. She loved them to the moon and back!

Janet is survived by her children Heidi Herman of Newton Falls, Ohio; Emmi (Karl) Seiler of Columbia Station, Ohio; and Wade Gordon of Austintown, Ohio; and her grandchildren Curtis Ray, Lila Jean, and Hanna Mae Herman of Newton Falls, Ohio; her Goddaughter Jody (Mike) Kays of Warren, Ohio; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition, she is survived by her siblings Ron (Debbie) Morris of Lake Milton, Ohio; Kermit (Linda) Morris of Leavittsburg, Ohio; Gary (Lisa) Morris of Ravenna, Ohio; and JoAnn Newman of Niles, Ohio. Preceding her in death is her husband, David Gordon; her parents, Kermit and Jean Morris; and her sisters, Karen Yohman and Deborah Claybourne.

The family also wants to extend our sincere gratitude to Patriot at Home health care for both their nursing care over the years and the hospice care support at Janet’s passing. We are especially grateful for the kind soul of Karen Terlecki, who was there for us through everything. We will be forever thankful for her generosity of time, support, and love for Janet.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday July 18, 2026, from 11am-1pm, with the service following at 1pm, all at James Funeral Home, 8 East Broad Street, Newton Falls, Ohio 44444. Cremation has already taken place. A private burial for immediate family will take place at another date. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, material contributions may be made to the Down Syndrome Association of the Valley using their website at https://www.dsav.org/donate.
