Richard Michael Fetcenko, Sr., 80, passed away peacefully into eternal rest on Thursday, August 16, 2018, at the Country Club Rehabilitation Campus in Newton Falls after a long illness.
He was born on February 8, 1938 in Yatesboro, PA the son of Steve Fetcenko and Sue (Kashella) Fetcenko.
In his early years, Rich was a gifted athlete, earning a baseball tryout with the Pittsburgh Pirates out of high school. Later in life he used these talents as a coach of many local youth league baseball teams where he lived in Newton Falls, OH.
A veteran of the US Army, he served his country honorably as a member of the 3rd Armored Division in Germany as a radio operator. When he returned home, he went to work for General Motors Lordstown for 34 years retiring in 2000, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Mary's & St. Joseph Catholic Church in Newton Falls.
Rich was a quiet, gentle man of few words who befriended almost all he came in contact with. He enjoyed the simple things in life, spending time with family and friends, a good meal, or watching his favorite sports. He loved to spend time golfing with his friends.
He will be deeply missed by his children, Carrie Fetcenko of Newton Falls, Rick (Kathleen) Fetcenko, of Cortland, his granddaughter Aubry Fetcenko of Toledo, his sister Carol Sago of Rural Valley, PA, and his loving companion of many years, Joanne Ballas of Newton Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and 3 sisters:Terry Fetcenko, Lillian Estatico, and Mary Luke.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, August 20, 2018 from 5 to 7pm at James Funeral Home in Newton Falls. A prayer service will be held on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at 10:00am at James Funeral Home and a Catholic Mass will follow at St. Mary & Joseph's Catholic Church at 10:30am. Richard will be laid to rest at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Newton Falls.
