Robert "Bob" J. Shaulis, age 86 of Newton Falls entered into eternal rest on Sunday, January 1, 2017 with his family by his side at his home. Bob was born on October 29, 1930 in Newton Falls the son of the late William E. & Florence (Price) Shaulis. Bob married the former Charlotte Irene DeBolt on February 28, 1959. Bob and Charlotte were blessed with 57 wonderful years of marriage. He was employed by Terex in Hudson, OH and retired from General Motors. Bob was a member of the Newton Falls United Methodist Church, a 50 year member of the Newton Falls Masonic Lodge #462, 32nd Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Youngstown, 50 year member of the American Legion #236 where he was a Past Commander and voted "Man of the Year" in the 1980s, Amvets Post #112, VFW Post #3332, Army & Navy Union USA and the Croatian Fraternal Union of America. Bob coached youth baseball in Newton Falls for 22 years winning numerous championships. He also coached for St. Mary's CES basketball teams. Bob took great pleasure and pride in shaping the lives of the young ball players that he coached. Teaching the fundamentals and work ethic was more important to him than any win or championship. Bob was inducted into the Trumbull County Sports Hall of Fame in 2014. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, and playing horseshoes. Bob was a gifted athlete in high school. After graduation, Bob had one of his finest moments at the end of the 1949 baseball summer league season when he played in a tournament in East Palestine and cranked seven home runs in front of scouts from the Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians and the New York Yankees. Bob was signed by the Cincinnati Reds in 1949. His promising baseball career was interrupted during the 1951-1953 seasons when he proudly served his country in the Army during the Korean War. Bob played professional baseball until 1955. His teams were featured in Time and Friends Magazines when they ran stories on the poor conditions that minor league baseball players had to endure at the time. Bob was also a Boy Scout Leader for several years. Loving memories of Bob will be carried on by his wife, Charlotte Irene Shaulis of Newton Falls, daughter, Kim (Joe) Ball of Newton Falls, sons, Bill (Lisa) Shaulis of Newton Falls, Brian M. Shaulis of Diamond, sister, LaVerne Jane Harvey of Newton Falls, Brother, Ray Thomas Shaulis of Newton Falls and his grandchildren, John Hernon, Belinda Hernon, Matthew Shaulis, Christopher Shaulis, Nicholas Ball, Marinda Ball and great grandchildren, Jordan, Korinne, Sophia and Skylar Hernon. Bob was preceded in death by two sons, Robert and Gary Shaulis. Masonic services will be held on Wednesday January 4, 2017 at 5:00 pm with calling hours following from 5:30 - 8:00 pm at James Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11:00 am at the Newton Falls United Methodist Church, 336 Ridge Rd., Newton Falls, OH 44444.
