Obituary

Thelma Delores Elmore was born a twin on July 25, 1932 in Newton Falls, OH to God-fearing parents Daniel Dorsette Elmore Sr. and Bertha Solomon Carroll Elmore. She was the seventh child of ten siblings. Her parents, as well as six siblings, Winifred Elmore Johnson, Velma Elmore Gordon (twin sister), Clara Elmore Sanderson Shaw, Rev. Daniel D. Elmore, Colonel Elmon McCarroll Elmore, and Dr. Joyce Ann Elmore Archer, preceded her in death. Throughout Thelma's life, education was one of her highest aims. She along with her siblings, planned and achieved considerable academic success. Miss Thelma, as she prefered to be called, graduated from Freedman's Hospital School of Nursing at Howard University in Washington, DC, and Mount Carmel Hospital of Anesthesia in Detroit, Michigan. She received graduate degrees from the University of Dayton and Ottawa University in Hospital Administration and Hospital Care. "Chunky" as known by her family, moved to Los Angeles in July 1972, to be with her father and stepmother mattie, whom she adored. Her father had been a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church since 1952 under the leadership of Rev. S.O.J. Evans. His dedication inspired her to join in 1974 under Dr. Floyd Massey Jr. Not only was she an active member under Dr. Massey, but she also continued under the pastors that followed his retirement: Rev. Aidsand Wright-Riggins and Rev. Robert L. Mason. She was a very supportive member: serving in the Sanctuary Choir since 1977, Deaconess Board since 1980, and active in the Sunday school. The Elmore Family Educational Assistance Fund was established by the Elmore Family in 1973 and has been administered by Macedonia's Scholarship Committee since 1980. Thelma served as an Advisory Member until her illness. Thelma had a successful career. She was employed with Kaiser Permanente in los Angeles for 28 years until her retirement in 1997 as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). She was a well-qualified employee with impeccable work ethics, who demanded respect. Thelma also held a commission as a Captain in the United States Air Force Reserves from 1971 to 1979. San Marcos Condominiums, the community where she resided, were grateful to have Thelma serve as Secretary on the Board. They knew her meticulous work ethic and attention to detail would ensure accurate records would be recorded and filed. Aunt Thelma. as she was also affectionately called among family, was a world traveler. She enjoyed many travels with her sister Ida and her friend Annie Sanders, dear friends, and family. Thelma also held vacation properties, which she shared freely. The Elmore Family Reunions were top among her favorite travels, as she was tremendously proud of her family, especially her nieces and nephews. She cherished spending time with family whenever possible. Thelma was gifted in many areas. Her musical talent included playing the piano and clarinet. She was also an actress whose work included a role in the 2005 remake of the movie "War of the Worlds." Thelma was caring, generous, thoughtful, and kind. Yet, she was also rigid, unyielding, controlling, demanding, nosy and bossy. She was a women who expected the quality of work and character that she herself demonstrated in everything she did. In her garden, which she loved, she cultivated beautiful plants. And in her baking, she was famous for her sweet potato and pecan pies, which she generously shared. At home or away, she would not eat anything without lemon pepper. All of these characteristics made Thelma an amazing Christian and friend. At home, on the evening of May 27, 2011, this beloved servant reached the end of her earthly travels. As she now resides with the Father, among those charged to cherish their fond memories of Thelma are: one brother, Robert B. Elmore of Detriot; two sisters. Ida Elmore Davis of New York, and Bertha Elmore Newbern (Carl) of Florida; nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews; a host of cousins and chrished friends. The family is having a memorial service on Sunday, July 24, 2011 at Braceville Cemetery at 9:30AM. Please to help celebrate Thelma's life with her family. Arrangements have been entrusted to the James Funeral Home, 8 East Broad Street, Newton Falls, OH 44444 (330)872-5440.
