Walter Gary Hickman, 82 of Newton Twp. passed away at 8:20 am on Sunday April 19, 2026 at Washington Square Nursing Home in Warren. He was born on May 2, 1943 in McKeesport, PA to the late Walter Brown Hickman and Idella Arlene (Weightman) Hickman.
Walter was a man characterized by technical brilliance, deep loyalty, and steadfast faith. A veteran of the United States Navy, he served during the Vietnam Era as a Machinist’s Mate 2and Class. Walter held the rare and prestigious honor of being a "Double Plank Owner" of the USS Iwo Jima, having served as a member of the original commissioning crew for the LPH-2 and later attending the christening of the LHD-7. He was awarded the Navy Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged in 1964.
Following his military service, Walter worked at Clairton Works and U.S. Steel before his distinguished 36-year career with General Motors at the Lordstown complex. As a Skilled Trades Millwright and a dedicated member of GM UAW Local 1112/1714, he was a master of his craft, respected for his ingenuity and his unwavering commitment to his fellow union members.
A man of deep faith, Walter was a devoted member of Emmanuel Ministries on Kirk Road in Austintown. He served his church community with pride, whether through his meticulous care of the church grounds or by raising his voice in the choir.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sue Hickman; his sons, Lonnie (Pranee) and Tim; and his brothers, Glenn, Tom, and Jeff Hickman. His legacy continues through his five cherished grandchildren: Jadon, Derek, Zachary, Sophie, and Kevin Hickman.
Walter was preceded in death by his son, Kevin Hickman; his brother, Ray Hickman; and his sister, Jean Andrews.
Family and friends may call on Sunday, April 26,2026 from 5-7PM at James Funeral Home, 8 East Broad Street, Newton Falls, Ohio. A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 27, 2026 at 10AM at the funeral home with military honors to follow at the committal service at the cemetery. Burial will take place at Meadow Brook Memorial Park in Champion Twp.
